The Tavern

After their long battle, the group decides it would be best to stop and rest for the night to allow the Cleric to heal before continuing their journey to the keep. Abigail agrees to stand guard for a few hours while the rest of the group rests. Awhile passes and nothing eventful has happened when she begins to hear a rustling sound coming from nearby. She creeps toward the sound to investigate what it may be or what it may be coming from. She realizes that the sound is coming from a human woman stumbling into their campsite area. Abigail commands her to hault and inquires of her what she’s doing in the area. She learns that the woman’s name is Hilda Sunderrer, a fighter, and that she is gravely injured from an ambush with several undead.

Abigail is suspicious of Hilda, but is left with little choice as Hilda has lost conciousness from her wounds. Abigail attempts dragging Hilda back to camp to figure out what to do with her from there when she begins to feel that she isn’t strong enough to drag her back to the camp on her own. The sound of the struggle causes Astrid to arise and assist her in dragging Hilda back to the camp. They heal Hilda and in turn she informs them that she was ambushed by several undead, but managed to fight them off, but just barely. She also informs them that she saw someone matching Shela’s description being dragged off into the keep and that she can lead them directly to the keep. After resting a bit longer they all head off in the direction of the keep.

When they finally arrive at the keep, Astrid attempts to detect evil within in the building and senses and immense evil in the center of the keep. Hilda tells the group she’ll climb up on one of the turrets of the keep and see if she can see anything inside the keep from the top. While at the top of the turret she spots a warlock and attempts to grab his foot to throw him, but fails, which catches his attention. The warlock runs to sound the alarm to the inhabitants of the keep, alerting them to the presence of the group. Hilda jumps down from the turret and they all run inside the keep, running into a small group of undead soldiers. They defeat the undead soldiers and decide to move on from there. The come upon a large door in front of them and a spiral staircase leading up behind them, they agree to try to open the large door but it appears to be barred shut from behind. Astrid and Hilda try battering it several times, and finally get it open.

When they finally bash the door from the hinges, they are greeted by an overwhelming pitch blackness and a deep chill runs through their bodies . Astrid tells the group that whatever is concealing itself in this darkness is immensely evil. They see an ice blue glow eminating from this darkness encroaching upon them. A humanesque figure approaches them; the ground he treads upon is instantly desecrated and streaked with the ice blue aura that also flows from his eyes in wispy tendrils that flow as he walks. He approaches them slowly, emphasising every step and demands of them, “Who dares enter my Keep?”, and it is then they realize it is a Lich King guarded by three large undead soldiers aws well as two undead dogs. The group is grossly overwhelmed and making little headway in defeating them when Ehllona speaks to Raevella and tells her that she will perform one final act in her name and then return to her. Raevella lights with a righteous fury and charges the Lich King. The Lich King has taken a bit of damage, and in turn rams his spear through Raevella’s heart, killing her. Even though she is dead, her body continues the turn undead spell, imprinting the holy symbol of Ehllona onto his skin. The holy symbol is pulsing throughout the lich king, and appears to be working, when it suddenly turns to ash and ceases its efficacy in injuring the lich king. During this assault Astrid has also prayed to Heironious and in seeking his assistance has floated off the ground, alight with a holy fire. While the rest of the group continues to attack the small army, Heironious tells Astrid to focus the holy fire on the Lich King, which she proceeds to do. Feeling as if he’s wasting his time, the Lich King calls upon his mighty dragon, who is damaging the already dilapidated keep to pick up its master and flies away. The group immediately turns to exit the door and follows the path they took to get to that door. The instant they all have exited the front door, the keep collapses into a pile of rubble.

The group takes Raevella’s body to the Cleric of the town and perform final rites for her. The group returns to the inn and tell the bar keeper that the undead have been dealt with and that a lich king was the culprit. However, he does not believe their story and demands that one of his people go scout the area to make sure they aren’t lying. Abigail becomes angry and smashes a beer bottle over the counter and tries to fight. Astrid comes to her side, but the bar keeper bashes both of them with his shield in one mighty blow, stopping the fight. His scout returns three days later and confirms their story. The group is about to leave the inn when Shela appears and asks where they’ve been. She was dragged into the keep but managed to escape and upon seeing the lich king, fled to the keep to wait for the group to warn them about it. She had actually been in the inn the entire time the group was searching for her.

Elf in the Corner

Our adventure begins in the plane of Aurora, on the continent of Diz, with Astrid Moonstrider, a Human Paladin of Heironious, entering the local tavern to respond to a plea for help to rid the areas surrounding the town of an army of undead. Immediately upon entering the tavern, she sees an Elven Cleric of Ehllona speaking loudly, but can’t articulate what she’s saying. The rest of the tavern is filled with a group of men, an older man sitting on his own, and an elf sitting in the corner, listening attentively to the Cleric. She approaches the elf and asks if he knows what the Cleric is speaking about and if she is in the tavern frequently. He tells her that she is a Cleric of Ehllona and that she is preaching, but leaves it at that, as he is still listening to her. Frustrated, Astrid approaches the older gentleman and asks him the same line of questions. Fortunately, he is much more helpful and informs her of the undead problem in the surrounding areas, though he asks her to speak to the Cleric to have her cease her preaching.

She approaches the Cleric and asks her what it is she is doing. She discovers the Cleric’s name is Raevella Bearcharger and informs Astrid that she is chanting a spell to protect the town from the encroaching undead army, but the people of the town are trying to make her leave the tavern. She is also extraordinarily frustrated that she’s trying to protect the townspeople with her chanting and they’re giving her a hard time by trying to make her leave. The bartender interrupts the conversation, which irritates Astrid to the point of swearing at him. Heironious intervenes and asks the Paladin to behave appropriately. She then begins to question him regarding the job flier. He instructs her that the undead are flocking to an old keep about a mile down the road and suspects there is a Necromancer behind it. Suddenly, there is a loud commotion as a large fight has broken out within the tavern. Amongst the throng of fighters emerges an intensely inebriated Scout, Shela Evergreen. The bartender advises them that this scout is an excellent archer and could be of great help to them. After agreeing to split the reward with her, they agree to set out after the Scout has sobered up and cleaned herself up.

Later on the Scout tells the group that the bartender was mistaken in saying the keep is a mile away; it is actually four miles away. They all set out and are two miles into their trek when the Scout stops abruptly and commands everyone to drop to the ground. While hiding they see an enormous army of undead trudging by. Twelve members of the undead army start to creep in their direction, and in an effort to save themselves, the Cleric attempts to invoke the presence of Ehllona to obliterate the undead. When this fails three of them charge the Cleric, one tripping, and two attempting to attack her. The Scout is still in hiding and after being discovered by the fallen undead soldier she is able roll out of dangers way. Unbeknownst to the group a trap had been previously set by an Elven Sorceress by the name of Abigail Raven. Perched up on the clifftops are dozens of enormous boulders; she triggers the trap using her magic missile spell and the boulders crush the undead. Though furious the group ruined her trap to kill the entire undead army, she joins in when a portion of the loot and reward money are promised to her.

It is this point that the Scout informs the group that she will be going ahead of them and following the army to figure out where they are going and their numbers. She asks the group to meet her back at the tavern in a fortnight. Once the dilapidated keep is within sight the group decides to make camp for the night. In the area near the campsite they see signs of an obvious struggle and what appear to be marks of a body being dragged, which leads them to assume that their Scout has been discovered and captured.
